Start Seeing Diversity Blog:  Creating Art

Thinking about what I have learned in this course about children identities and development and the ways in which each is impacted by bias, discomfort, and trauma.

Diversity is accepting people for who they are in the light

Even though it may cause pain in another person’s eye sight

People come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors

But who’s the blame, when everyone decides to take over one another

There’s so much to see on television and through books

I guess that’s the reason why many people give us “that” look

We have been told what’s right and what’s wrong

But we haven’t been told not to leave our comfort zone

This journey is long and tough

But with trust and respect we’ll overpass the rough

So let’s continue to love and respect

Because in the classroom, children don’t see pass the neck

Continuing to bow and give our teachers a hand

The more we learn, the better we’ll be able to stand

  1. Janet I enjoyed reading your poem you also hit on a good point when you said that no one is told to leave their comfort zone. I believe that leaving our comfort zones starts in the preschool classroom it is important to celebrate the differences in everyone's families and as preschool teachers I feel that it is up to us to do so in the classroom.

  2. I love your poem, it has a great rhythm and you say an awful lot in a short time. I appreciate that you include love and respect in there as well as what Rashida pointed out, about being told not to leave your comfort zone. I agree that it is our job in the early childhood field to help children learn about themselves and others in respectful ways, while still discovering new things. Thanks for sharing, great poem!

  3. Janet, I enjoyed reading the poem, diversity is a long journey. It takes a lot for people to change out of their comfort zone. Some of the best ways to start the journey is through children, love and respect. Thank you for expressing your learning through a poem. Tamarah

  4. Janet-

I really enjoyed your poem about diversity. You make a great point by mentioning how much we see in different forms of media, and how it makes up view and think about others. I feel that there is so much negativity in our world today, and we should have more TV shows, movies, books, etc. embracing our differences instead of tearing them apart. Great job this week!
